じょちゅう【女中】

1 〔下女〕 a maidservant; a maid; a housemaid; a domestic; 《米》 a domestic help; a chambermaid.

●宿屋の女中 〔客室係の〕 a chambermaid

・雑働き女中 〔雑役婦〕 a maid-of-all-work; a charwoman.

奥[上(_かみ)]女中 a maid who attended closely to her master [mistress] and dealt with matters relating to the living quarters, family members, etc.

御殿女中 a maidservant at the Court.

台所[下(_しも)]女中 a kitchen [scullery] maid.

女中頭(_がしら) the head maidservant; (大家(_たいけ)の) the housekeeper.

女中奉公 domestic service.
